How did the Explorer group get
started?
A: The son of a fireman formed the organization in 1981. John C Cobb, son of John W Cobb decided to try and start an explorer group so he sent out letters to the surrounding youths. At the first meeting over 40 teenagers showed up but at the time went on only the true stayed in. Around ten teenagers in all, set the pace for one of the strongest and finest explorer groups that are in service at this time. Back to top Q: How can I join? A: If this interests you, all you have to do is go to your local fire dept. and ask, and they will direct you in the right path. We are the only explorer group in the South Jefferson area. Back to top Q: Who can join? A: Anyone can join our explorer group if they meet these stipulations. They are between the ages of 14-21. You can join at 14 and become one part of our group. You need 10 dollars for insurance purposes. If you can get along with others, willing to learn and want to part of a special team. You are able to join the fire department at 18 if you think you are ready. Back to top Q: Why should I join? A: Well there is such a demand for volunteers now that it’s important that we go that extra mile and help our communities to the fullest. Because the person that needs help or their house is on fire may be your own or that of someone you know. Don’t wait to become a volunteer, train early as an explorer so you will be ready. Back to top Q: What do we do? A: We have meetings every Tuesday, Some of those nights we train or have quizzes on what we know. But also we go to the training center at Dry Hill and practice various firefighting techniques and skills, We hold our own fundraisers as well as our outings after a hard days work. But also during the summer we hold our own waterball competitions. Back to top |
